How To Write A UK-Style CV For NHS Jobs
A CV written for another market is one of the most common reasons strong clinicians never reach interview. This guide rebuilds your CV section by section in the order a UK shortlister reads it.
- Typical Time
- PT2H
- What You Need
- Existing CV, Registration details, Employment dates and settings, Audit, teaching and publication records, The advert and person specification
Step-By-Step
- 1
Strip Out What UK Employers Do Not Want
Remove your photograph, date of birth, marital status, religion, national identity number and family details. UK recruitment is anonymised and scored, so personal data of this kind adds no value and can look unprofessional.
- 2
Open With A Clear Header And Registration Line
Name, professional title, contact email and phone with country code, city and country, and your registration position stated plainly — for example GMC number, NMC number, or the exam stage you have reached. A shortlister should confirm your eligibility in the first five seconds.
- 3
Add A Four-Line Professional Summary
State your grade, specialty, years of relevant clinical experience, the setting you work in, and the type of post you are applying for. Keep it factual, avoid adjectives like dynamic or hardworking, and rewrite it to match each advert.
- 4
List Clinical Experience In Reverse Chronological Order
For each post give job title and grade, hospital and country, month and year start and end, and three or four bullets describing case mix, on-call intensity, level of independence and supervision. Explain any gap of more than a few months in one short line.
- 5
Evidence Procedures And Competencies
Add a short section listing procedures with approximate numbers and level of supervision, plus current life support certification. UK shortlisters score demonstrable competence, so numbers and dates carry far more weight than claims of familiarity.
- 6
Show Audit, Quality Improvement, Teaching And Publications
Give each audit or QIP a title, your role, the change you implemented and the measured result. List teaching activity with audience and frequency, and publications or presentations in a consistent citation format. These sections are almost always desirable criteria.
- 7
Format For Fast Scanning
Two pages where possible, one clean sans-serif font, consistent date formatting, no tables or columns that break parsing, no graphics, and British English spelling throughout. Export to PDF and name the file with your surname and the post.
- 8
Write A Cover Letter Against The Person Specification
Name the exact post and employer, then answer the essential criteria in the order the advert lists them, with one concrete example each. Close with your availability and registration position. Write a new letter for every vacancy rather than recycling one.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should an NHS CV be?
Two pages is a safe target for most posts. Senior clinicians with substantial publications may run longer, but the first page must still cover registration, grade and current experience.
Should I include references on the CV?
You can list two referees with work email addresses, or state that references are available on request. The online application form will ask for them formally in any case.
Do I need a different CV for each vacancy?
You keep one master CV, then adjust the summary and the emphasis of your experience for each advert so it lines up with that person specification.
Can you rewrite my CV for me?
Yes — the UK-format rewrite and per-vacancy tailoring are included in our $5.50 per application price, and you keep every document we produce.
Want Us To Do These Steps For You?
Upload one CV and we tailor it per vacancy, write the cover letter and submit the application on your instruction — $5.50 per application, from a single job.
